APPX Conference - October 2000
CWI is delighted to report that conference held Oct 19 - 22 in Jacksonville proved to be very exciting with respect to the future of APPX. It was a showcase for release 4.1, the latest and greatest release of APPX, and reinforced APPX Software Inc.'s (ASI's) resolve to launch its marketing campaign. Below are details of the highlights of the conference: New Features in APPX 4.1 In addition to its significantly enhanced GUI environment, there are a number of new features in APPX 4.1 which will substantially improve the design environment and offer new opportunities for APPX sales. These include but are not limited to the following:
Working with this new release of APPX will require a significant adjustment to programming practices for most designers, especially those who have come from a SPEED II background and have been working with APPX for some time. To assist in this transition process, CWI will be holding training courses in London from December 4th to 8th. The first three days will focus on advanced programming techniques and will use the new features in 4.1 to build a complete order entry/billing system. The last 2 days will focus on using the GUI features in 4.1 to enhance the Order Entry system. Anyone attending both courses will receive a 20% discount. Don't forget that as a CWI VAR you are welcome to attend these courses at no charge. Visit our website for more details on forthcoming training courses. Marketing As you are no doubt aware, ASI has announced its marketing strategy. It was very encouraging to see samples of this marketing material and to hear details of their marketing plans. For those of you who are still a little sceptical, CWI is pleased to announce that we will be uploading some samples of this material on CWI's VAR page for your perusal. Though the majority of the material is generic, CWI will be customising some sections to ensure that regional-specific issues are included. Simply stated, ASI's overall marketing goal is to increase the size of the APPX customer base by increasing the 'APPX' name recognition, generating leads for VAR sales, recruiting additional VARs and retaining its existing customer base. Included in the materials which will be available to VARs are the following:
In addition to the marketing material, ASI's website is being completely revamped and will have a strong emphasis on sales and marketing together with a whole new look and feel. The promotion methods which ASI is intending to use include internet advertising, press releases, hardware developer programs, O/S developer programs, software developer programs, trade shows, etc. ASI is focusing its marketing activities on specific areas: APPX as a development Tool, APPX as an RDBMS development tool, APPX as a multi language environment and using APPX as an Application Service Provider. Application hosting is once again becoming a popular trend. Smaller companies in particular prefer to pay to use the applications made available by their ASP rather than purchasing their own software and expensive computer equipment. With its new capabilities, APPX affords VARs the opportunity to move into the ASP market. The concept of Application Foundation Templates was also introduced. This is a new twist on an old concept: taking a standard set of financial applications and customizing it to the clients needs. This is something that we have been doing for years, but is now becoming a popular approach again. As part of the marketing materials, a reprint of an article on 'Application Foundation Templates' was included. To support this new emphasis on sales and marketing, CWI is introducing a co-operative advertising program for VARs which will enable VARs to qualify for co-op advertising credits based on reported sales. We will shortly be announcing full details of this program. New Pricing Structure In keeping with trends in the marketplace, ASI has reviewed and substantially modified its pricing structure. These pricing changes will make APPX more competitive, especially on the Windows and Linux platforms. Full details of the pricing changes will be posted on the VAR page on our website. ASI's R&D Plans There is still some work to be done before the Release 4.1 cycle is complete. This includes making additional changes to the Sybase and APPX ODBC interfaces, completing the DB2 interface and porting APPX to AS/400. The next step will be to begin working on Release 4.2. The focus of the 4.2 release will primarily be bug fixes. ASI is encouraging VARs and endusers to vote for their favourite (i.e. most irritating) bugs. If you have bugs fixes that you would like to nominate for inclusion in 4.2 but you have not subscribed to the APPX mailing list, then send the details to bhennessy@cwi-appx.com who will register them on your behalf. Be careful though, ASI can differentiate between 'bug fix requests' and 'enhancements cleverly disguised as bug fix requests'! Should you require any additional information or have specific questions on any of the items mentioned above then please do not hesitate to contact us on info@cwi-appx.com. [back to top] | |
